Tour description

Whale watching with Elding at 9:00 and Inside the Volcano at 14:00.

Available: 15 May – 30 September
Duration: Approx. 8 hrs.
Minimum age: 12 years old

This combo gives you the chance to enjoy many of the most amazing things Iceland has to offer – a great mixture of nature, history and adventure. First you will start with a complimentary pickup at your hotel around 8:15-8:45 that will drop you off at our ticket office. From there you will be shown to our Visitor Center where you can learn about whales, check out our souvenir shop or grab a cup of coffee before boarding the boat. The 3 hr. whale watching tour takes you out to Faxaflói bay, where you are likely to see Minke whales, dolphins porpoises and even Humpback whales! On board you will have live commentary throughout, onboard café with light refreshments and toilet facilities. You can even borrow one of our overalls or blankets if it’s cold out!

Once back in the harbour you have about an hours time in between tours, which we recommend using for grabbing lunch in one of the nice restaurants around the area – your Whale Watching ticket gives you 15% discount at MAR Restaurant! Inside the Volcano minibus will collect you from outside our ticket office at around 13:20, so make sure to be in the area or let our staff know where you will reside in the meantime so we can make sure you won’t miss it!

The drive from Reykjavik to Blafjoll mountain cabin takes about 30 minutes. A guide will meet and greet you at the cabin, before leading the way during the hike across the lava field. The hike will be entertaining and enlightening and takes about 45–50 minutes to complete. It’s rated as moderate in difficulty – it’s not uphill and although you will be walking on a hiking trail for the most part, the surface can be hilly and uneven. After arriving on location, your group will be informed about all safety procedures and how to behave in the area and when inside the volcano. You will be wearing a helmet and harness. The group is then split into a smaller party of 4–5 people. The trip down or up takes about 6 minutes and the first ones to go down will usually be the first ones to go up. You will spend about half an hour on the ground of the volcano, in which time you can take as many photos as you want. However, you are not allowed to take rocks and stones from the crater. Expert guides will be with you at all times, in the cable lift and on the ground in the magma chamber. When you are back on the surface, while waiting for everyone in the group to complete the volcano visit, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Icelandic meat soup, hot coffee/tea/chocolate and perhaps some sweets. Finally, you will walk back over the lava field. The coach will be waiting for you in the parking lot, ready to drive you back to your hotel in Reykjavik.

Bring with you:
*Good (hiking) shoes – if you have them.
*Outdoor clothing. A warm sweater and jacket are very useful, not least because it’s always the same temperature inside the crater – about 5–6°C (42–43°F). That’s cold!
*A camera, so you can take as many pictures as you want!
