The Lava Tunnel – Raufarhólshellir

A journey into Raufarhólshellir is a unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption as one walks in the path of lava that flowed 5.200 years ago. In the forefront of the cave, three skylights give the cave a unique surrounding as columns of daylights find its way into the lava tunnel. Every winter spectacular ice sculptures are formed inside the entrance of the cave making the experience of visiting the lava tunnel even more breathtaking.

Our standard tour allows you to explore the tunnel in an easy and enjoyable manner. Due to its rough terrain, we have built a footbridge/path so you are navigate the cave in a comfortable manner. We have also put up impressive lighting which highlights the changing colors and the amazing geological formations inside the cave. A guide will take you through the caves unique geological formations and its ties with Hollywood and the great explorer Magellan, among other things. This tour is open to everyone that is comfortable walking on an uneven surface and departs every hour on the hour from 10 am to 5 pm. The tour takes approximately one hour. Our extreme tour is for the adventure seeker and takes you all the way to the end of the tunnel where magnificent lava falls and other natural monuments await.
