Into the Glacier day tour with Reykjavik Sightseeing

The Ice Cave Classic is an amazing opportunity to see the Langjökull glacier ice cap and explore what lies below. It’s a once in a lifetime experience where you descend into the glacier´s icy netherworld, as well as exploring the nearby lava fields, glacier landscapes and its amazing waterfalls.

We depart early from Reykjavík city and get the crisp morning view of our destination, the Langjökull Glacier. Langjökull is 953 sq/km, making it the second largest glacier in the country. Step on board our all new bus fleet, equipped with computer tablets in each seat. On the tablets you can use our GPS Sensitive In Bus Audio Guide, available in 10 languages: English, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Mandarin) and German. So if you wish to know interesting facts about Iceland and the places you will visit on the tour in a language you are comfortable, that is very possible. Onboard you will also find a USB Charger and free wifi.

You soon discover that in Iceland everything is possible – before you know it you find yourself standing on top of a vast ice-cap, ready to descend into the glacier and explore its icy netherworld.

To get to the Ice Cave we ride in a huge specially-modified truck. The Ice Tunnel and Cave are man-made and located high up in a remote area of the glacier in the very heart of Iceland. Your guide will explain to you how global warming has now started to impact on  the glacial environment.

Your guide will then take you on an amazing journey, deep within the glacier where you can see the stunning blue-hued  ice. The glacier is in constant motion and here we can literally see that movement  first hand.

Until very recently what lay beneath the surface of Langjökull was a mystery. Sometimes with vision and determination bold ideas can become a reality. The realization of this seemingly crazy notion of boring an ice tunnel deep into the glacier only became possible through the combined efforts of the country´s top engineers and  geophysicists. The temperature inside the glacier is usually around zero degrees Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit.

Back on the surface we jump aboard the welcome warmth of the glacier truck. We eat lunch at the stunning Hotel Húsafell and then we continue our tour of the Borgarfjörður valley. We get to see Hraunfossar, a beautiful lava waterfall almost a mile long gushing through a wall of lava.
