TOUR DESCRIPTION

Whale Watching and Lava Cave Expedition
This tour combines two fantastic adventures. After exploring the great hidden lava caves in the outskirts of Reykjavík it is time to search for and watch the whales and birds of Faxaflói bay.
You will be picked up from a designated bus stop near your hotel between 8:30 and 8:50 for the lava caving adventure tour operated by Icelandic Mountain Guides. After exploring the magic of Icelandic caves you will be dropped off at the lively Old Harbour where you will board our vessel for an afternoon whale watching tour starting at 13:00. The tour runs for approx. 3 hrs. so you will be back at the harbour around 16:00, where you can choose between staying in town and eventually making your own way back to the hotel or board our bus for drop off at the designated bus stop near your hotel.
Lava Caving:
On this short, year-round caving adventure we journey into one of the great hidden lava caves in the outskirts of Reykjavík. As we make our way into the cave, we discover the beauty of stalagmites and stalactites, learn more about the formation of lava caves and their role in many different Icelandic myths. During late winter, guests can sometimes see beautiful ice formations inside the cave. Just getting into the cave when snow has built up can be an adventure itself. The trip is suitable for most people, but to finish a round trip in the cave, adventurers must be ready to crawl and bend down for a short distance. This trip is a great introduction to Icelandic Lava Caves.
Whale Watching:
Summer season (1 April – 31 October) is great for whale watching, as the wildlife in the bay is at it’s highest peak! This is the time when the Minke whales are at their most abundant, along with White-beaked dolphins, Harbour porpoises and the occasional Humpback whales, giving us the chance to enjoy and understand them in their natural environment.
Winter season (1 November – 31 March) is a whole other experience and adventure compared to our summer tours. Each year continues to surprise us with the wildlife it offers. The winter low lying sun is also something not to be missed, as it casts a warm glow over the white-capped mountains surrounding the bay and to breathe in the winter’s fresh and crisp air is just incredible.
